1. About these terms
Sokhan is a dictation app for the Mac, provided by Ayda Digital (United Kingdom). It lives in your menu bar; hold the dictation key, speak, and your words are typed into whatever app you are using.
By downloading or using Sokhan you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. Dictation is not perfect — check it
You are responsible for anything you send or record using text Sokhan produced.
3. Your audio leaves your Mac
Unless you have chosen the on-device English option, the audio you dictate is sent to our servers and on to specialist speech-recognition providers (and comparable services) working for us, so that it can be turned into text. That means:
- Do not dictate anything you are not entitled to share — confidential, privileged, classified or commercially sensitive material, or anything your employer's rules do not allow to be sent to an outside service.
- If you are dictating someone else's words or personal details, make sure you have their consent and any permission your workplace requires.
4. Not a substitute for professional records or advice
Sokhan is a general-purpose typing aid. It is not a clinical, legal or financial record system, it does not check or validate what you dictate, and it is not a substitute for professional records, professional judgement or professional advice. If you use it in a regulated setting, you remain responsible for meeting your own record-keeping, accuracy and confidentiality obligations.
5. Sokhan types into other apps — you decide where
Sokhan inserts text wherever your cursor happens to be. It cannot tell a private note from a group chat, a draft from a "send" box, or the right window from the wrong one. You are responsible for where the text lands — check the cursor is where you think it is before you dictate, and re-read before sending.
The App Store edition works slightly differently: instead of typing for you, it places the finished text on your clipboard and you press ⌘V where you want it. Either way, where the text ends up is your decision.
6. Permissions
Sokhan asks for the microphone (to hear you while you hold the key) and, in the direct-download edition, Accessibility / input monitoring (which macOS requires so the app can notice the dictation key anywhere on the system and type the finished text into your app). Sokhan watches for that one key; it does not record, store or transmit your typing, your screen, or the contents of other apps. You can withdraw either permission at any time in System Settings, and dictation will simply stop working.
7. Your account, and its limits
Signing in gives you a monthly allowance of transcription. Keep your sign-in details to yourself and do not let others use your account. Your account is protected only by your device and your sign-in: anyone who can unlock your Mac or sign in as you can dictate as you. Keep your Mac locked, use two-factor authentication, and sign out on shared computers.
We are not responsible for what other people do with information you dictated or shared onward, or for anyone who gains access to your account, your device, or anything you sent — partner, family, employer or anyone else.
8. Data loss
Sokhan is provided free of charge and as-is. It keeps no archive of your dictations: once the text is typed into another app, that is the only copy. We give no promise that any text is kept, saved or delivered, and we are not liable for lost, deleted or corrupted text or data. Keep your own copies and back up your work.
9. Lawful and acceptable use
Use Sokhan only for lawful, non-abusive purposes. You must not use it to record or transcribe people without the consent the law requires, to harass or defame anyone, to handle material you have no right to handle, or to attempt to break, overload or reverse-engineer the service. You alone are responsible for complying with the law where you are, including recording and privacy laws. We may suspend accounts that break these rules and may cooperate with lawful requests from the authorities.
10. No warranty
Sokhan is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will be accurate, uninterrupted, available at any particular time, or fit for any particular purpose, and we may change, suspend or withdraw it or any part of it.
11. Liability
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim connected with Sokhan is limited to £50, or — if you have paid us for the service — the amount you paid in the 12 months before the claim, whichever is greater. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data, or loss caused by errors in dictated text you did not check.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
12. Law, and the App Store
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you keep the protections of your local law.
If you downloaded Sokhan from the Mac App Store, Apple's standard licence terms (the Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement) also apply. Apple is not a party to these terms and has no responsibility for the app; any App Store support or refund questions go to Apple.
13. Changes and contact
We may update these terms; the date at the top shows when. Continuing to use Sokhan after a change means you accept the new terms.
